Anyone have the time to explain the difference between planar and bipolar transistors functions in circuits?

the difference between a 2n1711 and a 2n3055 is what im wanting to know.

bipolar transistors work with current in the base instead of voltage...without current the transistor open... mosfets and igbts are electrostatic devices the gate dont consume current...

planar is related to the phisical design of the semiconductor,,,
