Testing new flame arrestor and torch design explosion
« on: April 19, 2008, 03:53:55 am »
My test cell exploded today while I was experimenting with a torch. The flame arrestor did not work properly and the ziplock plastic test cell exploded its top off. I would highly recommend a small test cell made of thin plastic when experimenting with a torch.
Basically what happeneds is a loud friggin bang and you jump 5 foot in the air.  Look down and the top completely gone except the ring that has the threads.

I would hate to have a PVC cell explode in your face.

The flame arrestor has to be made of wet, fine bronze wool. I used wet, course SS mesh.
You live, you learn....

heres a picture of what i'm using here

to be clear, what fuel cell are you using on this little torch. are you using an alterntor and are you able to measure your amps and volts?

and have you learned how to piss the torch or can you make the torch piss.

I haven't been able to sustain a flame with my test electrodes and cell. Its only got 2, three inch electrodes.
Yes I am using an alternator and my output is 26v but I cant get my amp meters to work right.  The gauge I'm using keeps shorting out my system and making sparks on the bridge... but when I did read the output it was 30a??...  The ammeter connects to + on alt and - on battery right?   I think my gauges (2) are non-functional...
The torch knows how to piss on me right now and blew up my container.  I'm still learning!
Besides, my new tubes arrive Monday so after I experiment with the length and gaps on the new set, I'll have a brand new, re-designed big cell to play with.
I'm going to have a .070" gap on my new set of tubes.  These ones I'm toying with have a .024" gap.
