You are correct in that no one is going to pull their cylinder head just to try this.
My head needed to be skimmed before replacing the gasget.
I also had the valves reground and lapped.
I also did a little port matching at the port - seat interface.
You will learn that I research my pet interests very well.
I decided to give it a try after reading pages like this:

The mixture burns faster and you can adjust that burn to take place at the optimal crank angle.
More of the mixture is burned rather than wasted.
I figured that if it did not work/help I would have lost nothing, as long as I made sure not to leave any sharp points or edges where pre ignition could happen.
