How to cut your tubes
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:01:30 am »
Dont use any form of torch. It will slag on the inside causing the inner tube to not fit.  I tried to cut some small pieces with a plasma cutter. They cut but like I said the slag closes the gap on the inner and outer tube.  I recommend using a band saw for the cleanest cuts. A chop saw with a metal blade will work but will require some filing... extra work.

Kevin West used a big plumber's tubing cutter I think. (I oughta try that one from Granddad's tool chest)

I use a chop saw and cutoff wheel, then jam the tube up against a silver-deming bit larger that the OD and debur the inside.  Hang on tight with leather gloves.

Bench grinder for the outside.  Kinda archaic, but gits the job done.   Might try the metal lathe next time

Turtle, slow

I got the tube cutter and it works great. I love it. SS is hard so if you cut thin stuff you have to dig in slow and let the blade cut otherwise you will curve over the ends a bit. (Going hard works great for the inner tubes to increase gap at the ends.)
