The laser should be extracted from a DVD BURNER not a dvd reader, Cdrw's or cd players, xbox etc,,, will not work. they produce a beam the eye can't see.

a lazer pointer is about 5MW
a Cdrw etc is 1 to 5 MW
a DVD BURNER is 100 to 240 MW max


Looking at the DVD Burner you will probably think the lens on top that reads the dvd disk is a laser, it is not! the laser is hidden underneath that, lasers are damaged by static very easy! and i mean very easy.

when you take your DVD burner apart, scrap the glue off being carufull. Never overheat the laser with a soldering iron, and never hook it to over 5 volts. normal voltages used direct current is 3 volts.

the pins of the lasers will be the same, you have a top leg +, a left middle leg nothing, and a bottom leg -.

the break reverse voltage is normally 2 volts.

The laser should use a 50/50 duty cycle pulsed to get its max output, i am unsure if we use 3 volt pulses or 5. i think you would use 5 volts when pulsed, thats the lasers voltage rating.


the pulse frequency is around 6 Mhz square wave.

never point any laser at your eyes, not even a cdrw laser, it will blind you and you will not know its doing it.

also, never ever leave your high powered lasers around kids or point them at anyone, or into the sky, don't be pointing it into someones window, it could reflect and burn your neighbors eye's and will blind them for life.

measure what? you put the laser in the lens i provided a link for the lens. some dvd burners have small lasers, thats rare but still usable, if it is over 16x it will work no matter the size.

most lasers in dvd burners are round and have 3 legs, very rarely you run across a small one.

Sorry guys, I did try this out with a broken DVD burner and I barely got any light from the diode and I almost burn my fingers because it got REALLY hot.

my conclusion is it doesn´t work.

Let´s focus our attention on WFC

there's many step by step instructions on the net if you had problems with the device, just because you couldn't get it to work doesn't mean we all willl stop working on the laser.

if you didn't see any light you may have damaged the laser during removal or maybe you used the wrong housing. lasers is very fragile and can be zaped with static from your finger or hair, it is common to damage lasers on removal. its not a ordanary electronic part, they are very very very sensitive.  also did you take the time to order the proper lens housing in the link i posted?

there are many forums on the internet based oh Diy high powered lasers, have a google and check them out, "they work!"

I agree with you, a powerful laser sounds like a fun thing to do, I just tried it following some simple instructions on metacafe and it was a complete failure. but then again may be the laser was already burnt before pulling it out. Please, don´t stop building this things, they sound like fun, just post a pic or a video if you get it to work :)

building a laser is really the last thing on my list right now or atleast the least important thing to me. allthough i am curiouse of what the laser will do to a water drop if it can lite a match, there is also a green laser hack, have you guy's seen the video?

i talked with a guy on the laser pointer forum and he talks like it will just go threw the water and not do anything, not sure if he is guessing or he actually knows it will do nothing? he did tell me to point it at a leather wallet and watch the amazement... that made me think it heats leather???

stan zapped the water in the WFC, the ambient air and the EGR with laser photon (light) energy.
He said I improves production.   Solid state lasers.

I think hydro is on the right track here with the hi power laser. I did notice that when you microwave the water right before you use it in the cell, the hydrogen production is greatly increased.

You are right transparent lets light through, but the froth which comes out the electrodes is anything but transparent.

The trick is to inject the laser light at the froth mixed with water as it is traveling inside and through the tube(s).
Plus when you pulse it, there is more energy absorption.
