From what I can gather this planet comes by every 3600 years and the effects are getting less damaging everytime it passes by. But for sure it is going to cause damage on a global scale. That is just one more reason to have this technology solved well before then, for we just might have another great flood, and the water will be unfit to drink, but the technology will make it fit too drink and provide power to boot.
