OK, then, so far so good.  I made a fixture to hold the tube and bolt in alignment, whilst the welding clamp holds the pipe and a magnet-mounted mild steel plate holds the 304 bolt.

Line it all up, and hit it with the MIG on low power.  After all the spittin' and complaining, it settled down into a nice burn and a pert-near perfect weld.

Flip it over to pull the draw and it looks pretty darn good.

Used the above setup and argon / co2 mix.

In playin' withit before the actual weld, it didn't work very well on the 316L to 304 joint.

Seemed best on 304.

No pics fer a week -on the dinosaur line

This opens up some new vistas cuz now I can do fabbin' here without having to load up and jig up at the TIGman's shop.

And to think that roll of 308 has been here for months...

I had some good success with implementing the above strategy.   I made 13 pipes with the 1/4" bolt welded to one end.   Most turned out aligned within 0.010" and the ones that were way off got slapped back into shape with a big pry bar.

Gonna drill some circulation holes then prep 'em for installation in the 3-tube cells.

One set will git epoxy-primer coated to 2 mils thick for that experiment as well.

Slow but sure progress.
